Perhaps the oddest of them all is the Handlebar Club of Great Britain. It was founded in 1947 by Jimmy Edwards, a popular post-war comedian, who once sang: "Every girl loves a fella with a bush upon hismush!" The Handlebar Club originally had ten members; today, it has around 100 acolytes from all over the world. The club's mission was and remains "to bring together moustache wearers socially for sport and general conviviality". The criterion for membership is simple: prospective members must have "a hirsute appendage of the upper lip, with graspable extremities". Beards are banned. The other essential qualification is "to be able to drink plenty of beer" at the club's monthly get-togethers at the Windsor Castle pub, just off Edgware Road. Naturally, the pub landlord, Michael Tierney, is a club member with impressive "lip foliage".
Work in progress..

My idea for this is quite simple. I am going to do some screen printing for this project, the first flavour I am going to do is their APPLE AND BLACKBERRY flavoured drink. The idea is just to have the fruit shaped like a bottle.

Here are some sketches as to what the first flavour might look like

To design a front for cover for the magazine Little White Lies. Look at the films

tinker, tailor. soldier. spy
Black Swan
The tree of life
Drive
Super 8

Illustrate the front cover depicting the main character from one of these films.

My first initial film character cover was the character from super 8, but I then changed my mind quite a lot to Tinker, tailor ,soldier, spy.

Rough

I realise some of the letters might need adjusting as its not entirely obvious what they are like the a.

Final in prgress..needs a tidy up and letters

Another brief we have been given is to create a rough for an editorial piece, the Editorial was about small wins equals a big positive impact in buisness. The idea above is like a snakes and ladders idea- having small ladders representing the small wins, and progression.

PART TWO: HOW TO BE...CONCEITED.

A text by Guy Browning , about self loving.
My idea is based on facebook pictures, about how many people take pictures of themselves. ( You can tell by the way their arms are). To me this represents self love as they obviously love themselves so much they want to take countless pictures of themselves because they are so hot and think that everyone should see them..and the strange thing is they have many friends because they pretend to be so innocent.

Another idea is to look at Greek Mythology:Narcissus who looked at his own reflection, and was so unable to leave the beauty of his own reflection he died.
To counter this and attract a younger consumer the Spam Corporation is planning a series of press ads to humorously and ironically undermine this notion while promoting the product as being fun and modern.

The brief is about creating characters in an environment. You are given a specific scene to depict as well as the context for your illustration. You are asked to devise appropriate letterforms, and include a photograph as an integrated part of your design.

Product should be roughly central. Main image features at least three happy characters, a spaceman or woman, a robot and an alien, along with appropriate paraphernalia. Produce image and text to your own style. Include text with the exception of the word Slam where you should use the existing logo.

This is my idea for a robot, my idea was to do something not so typical, as in alien with square face etc withwith different shapes and parts etc. Fir inspiration I did look at Phil Wrigglesworth illustrations- this is where the colours mainly came from, and I remeber in the second year I did a piece which combined photography and lino cutting. I would have liked to do a screen print for the collage parts, however I think the collage does work well.

This is for my alien. This one I struggled with the most because I didn't know what to use for the body, so I ended up with a flying saucer idea, but it turned out to look like some crazy cowboy, but I kind of like that so I used it.
Idea for spaceman. I knew I wanted a rocket for a body, however I did look into other things such as a space station, but I think this could have been too advanced for the target audience.
Here is my final piece for an advertising brief. I am actually quite happy with it. I think the colours work well along with the combinaton of collage and photographs. I might do a few tweaks to it tomorrow such as changing the colour of the spam logo to the same yellow as the collage yellow.
Final art work for spam advertisement. ( maybe blending into the flame) the flame would be created by using tissue paper. I would combine Rene Magritte with some of the things from Keitaro Sugihara- illustrators that I have looked at in the second part: summer project continued. ( Obviously there wold be seven candle holders not three)

Another idea would be to use the idea of the board game snakes and ladders, having some of the characters climbing up the ladders and sliding down the snakes. I thought this could also be relevant to the idea of the word party as people play games at parties.Anna O'Connorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11360439569249119415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5898494476887828309.post-34769190452548504582011-10-06T14:47:00.000-07:002011-10-09T12:52:33.908-07:00Second Part: Ideas for final partyFollowing Saul Steinberg's 'Techniques at a party" in 1953 you are inspired to host( and illustrate) a party of your own.

From the summer project you already have seven guests.

The party takes place in a room which in itself has personality..the proportions of the space, the furnishings, the period, the way its is decorated are all distinctive.
Looking at a variety of artists, locate objects and characters in pictorial spaces.

All of the guests, at least seven as well as the host- this is to do a self portrait- are interesting because of the ways they are depicted, each one in a different style, They are not invited because you like them, but because they are distinctive individuals.
Invitation did specify ' formal dress' but may guests have chosen to ignore this.

Output for this project is finished art work 250mm h by 400mm w.

Firstly I have looked at some illustrators that will inspire me in order to create this party, looking more specifically at the style of the artist, deconstructing and saying what I like about the image/ style.

Looking at Dale Edwin Murrays, work he uses a lot of simple lines to create his characters, faces, and few lines to create them too, along with a basic shape that has been manipulated to create the shape of the face.. But with this he manages to express the characters emotions/ feelings well. For the body of the character he uses simple block colours and outlines which capture what the character is doing or how the character is moving. It is clear what the characters are doing in every image which is important so that the audience does not get confused about the actions, and characters work well together.
Mainly used in the background he uses colours added with an almost cross-hatch pattern. This is the main thing I really like about his work as it makes the characters/ main part stand out.

Jane Ormes uses silk printing to create her work. Using simple shapes to create exciting patterns, her work features birds and anything environmental such a plants and trees, her images have few objects or animals, but her composition is very good., The work almost looks delicate, using bright colours that combine well.

This is something I would like to look at further, possibly in this project, colours and patterns that work well together.
These two images I picked out because one the first one it looks like he has used some materials such as card board, stamps and tape to maybe represent an idea, maybe from trying to save forests??, it works well because of the way he has represented trees, we all know they have leaves but by using an outline on a variety or types of tree and using them together it creates interest.

On the second image I this the combination of blocks or colour and lines work really well.
I love how in many of his pieces he uses different shades of the same colour, or colours with very subtle differences. the city scene images are very busy, and like many of the artists show a representation of something- in this case buildings.
In this one its very busy with more of a close up of the buildings, using pastel shades for the buildings, with darker pastel colours for the windows. the simple outlines for all the detail work against the colours. The buildings look quirky, and slanted.
Using blocks of colour for most part of this piece, works well against the cheerful patterns of the hot air balloon, the characters are quite "square", and stand out against the pale background. The lines are edges of each object make it clear as to what is what.
RENE MAGRITTE

In Rene Magritte's work she uses very realistic patterns such as clouds. Even the buildings look quite real by simply creating a shadow on the windows, with the repetition and scaled down men. across the canvas.

This image I choose because of the use of realistic pattern of the clouds which is cut in the shape of a bird. The outline of he shape and pattern combined work well.
I find the trees on this very interesting, still holding all the detail of a tree, but in a leaf/tree shape, this has been represented well and makes a striking image.
In other works, its seems as if he uses an image that almost has this cut out effect to reveal another image, I think this is something I would like to consider in my final art work.
KEITARO SUHIHARA
Yesterday I found an artist called Keitaro Sugihara, I absolutely love this work, using collage, within collage, making little details within patterns. Creating textured by scrunching paper and using newsprint have worked really well. The images are very quirky by scaling up and down certain parts of the image, and the use of colours are bright but not over-powering. Using simple shapes for the main part of the image and the smaller detail of the flowers, making something so ordinary exciting.
The second stage is to look at illustrators who have combined characters together in order to look at how the characters interact.Talking to Jamie ( one of my tutors), he said this was an important part of the process- working on how your characters work with each other, and to try and make it fun and lively.
Speaking to Howard( another tutor) he said somehow in this you need to look at a selection of artists and evaluate what you like about their work, and by doing this combining the bits you like and to filter it through myself, so it has some parts from a variety of illustrators but can show you as an illustrator as well.Anna O'Connorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11360439569249119415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5898494476887828309.post-22195046631521288712011-10-05T11:36:00.000-07:002011-10-06T09:38:08.100-07:00Screen PrintingAs something that I haven't done before I thought it would be good to write about the process and how I feel it went etc.....

STEP ONE - Draw out your image, and from this you then draw out what you want from your image- colour wise, you have to do this per colour( so if you have two colours you will have one where you want the red to print for instance and another what you want printed in brown). This can be done as an outline or if you want a block of colour shade it in using a black pen something like a sharpie will do.

ROUGH SKETCH OF THE IMAGE I WANTED TO SCREEN PRINT

STEP TWO - Photocopy these as the ink will run from the originals if you use them in the next stage. You then need to cut these out as close to the image but not cutting through it.

STAGE THREE- In this stage you need to use a rag to oil the images up. after this place them on a clean surface where with another rag or scrunched up paper you are to remove the excess oil, do this until the paper has a translucent quality (like tracing paper).

STEP FOUR - Using the screening plates place them in an exposure unit, putting your images under the plates facing the way you want them to print, this process will act as a vacuum, and this is what makes the image go onto the screen, do this until finished. Thoroughly wash down your plate with water.

STEP FIVE - You are now ready to print.First thing to do is mix your paint to the colour you desire. With this you have to add an emulsion (ratio of 50/50). The emulsion will make your paint less gloopy, if this does not work to the desired effect, you can add some water. Make sure there is tape around all the sides of your print but not touching it ( this will make sure the paint does not run).

STEP SIX - Placing the screen inside the bench ( this will have clamps, on the surface there should be a large sheet of acetate, with some tape across one of the sides). using the wooden frame and clamps secure the plate as tight as possible within the frame, making sure the wooden frame edges are under the screen. Press the vacuum button on the bench before starting to print. Make sure the acetate is on the bench.

STEP SEVEN - Place the ink on one of or above the top piece of tape. Using a squeegee press the ink down across your image( the more pressure the better- you might need to do this a few times). The vacuum will make all the paint stick to the acetate, you do this on acetate first so you can line up the image it comes to doing this on paper.

STEP EIGHT - When you are happy that it has worked well on the acetate, place paper under this to do the final thing, line it up with the image on the acetate, peel the acetate back put the wooden frame down, and repeat step seven again.

If you want to do another colour then you should wipe the first image of the acetate and repeat steps seven and eight. Making sure the first colour is lines up to the second, you can do this for as many colours/ layers you want.Anna O'Connorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11360439569249119415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5898494476887828309.post-14882314065610042692011-10-04T07:44:00.000-07:002011-12-02T08:34:08.843-08:00Summer projectThe brief for the summer project was to be inspired upon Saul Steinberg's 'Techniques at a party' from 1953. We had to create at least seven very different characters of our own ( a4 size), looking at various illustrators for inspiration.

I was trying to think of ideas of what to base my characters on, I created a character called Gill, I wanted to portray the things I dislike about this characters, so I came up with a list..here is a selection I illustrated for the summer project...

1. I dislike that she walks around the house naked.

I then looked at illustrators that suited my own personal style( mainly computer and college work). I first did this on the computer, however in doing the head I realised that it needed that extra something, so I did it in collage- which was more like the illustrator ISTVAN SCHRITTER anyways.

2. I hate that she wakes me up all the time.

For this piece I looked at LUCY MCLAUCHLAN, I had quite a few problems with the body on this one as I didn't know what to choose for her to wear. I was going to put clocks in the background, but I decided to just make it the body in the end , which I think works well. I like the concept, but I do feel that this could be improved.

3.Getting drunk and sometimes not being able to control herself.

This illustration was based on the style of Jim Flora, I changed the idea several timesAS i wasen't really sure on what I wanted to do for this one, or how I wanted her to pose, originally I did have her standing like this, the idea was to have her holding a funnel running down to her open mouth , with wine pouring down it, however I wasen't happy with the pose, so I thought about what else she could be doing.
I then decided to change her body around completely, this gave me the idea to have her dragging on the floor, then I just re arranged her arms and legs to fit in. I already had the wine bottle, so I added a wine bottle- Not really sure that a drunk person would reach for it, but I thought i'd give her a bit of class.

4. The constant farting

This Piece was inspired by Martin Jarrie, its more in the style as he doesn't do screen printing, but I thought that it would be a good opportunity to try this method of printing. This was my first time,I think the red in the corner could have come out better, but I think it's quite a nice image.

5. Feels like she must get ready all the time..doing her hair is an important part of this making sure it looks perfect.

This style I tried using influence from Kveta Pacovska. Her images are quite playful and colourful, this sit he main thing I took from her illustrations. I used the hair dryer as the face and the beloved hairbrush is the hair/or the black spikes at the top.

6. Having to be at her beckoning call.

This is a rough sketch of what I want the final to look like.I am trying to replicate the style of David Hughes, and although this really isn't in my comfort zone I would like a bit of a challenge. I shall use dip and ink pen( like David Hughes does), there shall be a bell in her hand. The arms will be made separate from the rest of the illustration, with pins so that the bell can move up and down. This shall be done by using white paper. The dress shall be coloured in red i think ( as she wears this colour a lot).

One of my tutors ( Sue) looked at this and said that if you look at David Hughes work its more 3D whereas mine is drawn as if it were flat, this is something I need to work on for this piece.

7. I thought as a last one i'd do a nice image to represent the good side of this character, underneath all the dislikes, she is very caring and helps a lot.

The style I would like to do this in is Pablo Labato. The style is almost like a modern day Pablo Picasso, with all the blocks of colours and and variety of shapes. He mainly illustrates celebrities. here are a few images to show the style.
SELF PORTRAIT: Hosting the party is me. I looked at an illustrator Agata Dudek. I love this work, combing watercolours and strong lines. This is a rough sketch I have done as an idea for my self portrait. Like the image below (of hers) I would like to add some graph paper and some more swirls- for the hair, and a background colour, and maybe arms but I can't quite decide what they should be doing yet.
